The New York Giants are trading star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals in a deal that send the No. 10 overall pick to New York. The Giants now have the No. 5 and No. 10 pick in the upcoming draft, which kicks off on April 23.

This is an intriguing move for the SEC because the Giants have need for a cornerback this offseason, and the top 2 cornerbacks in the draft are both from the SEC — LSU‘s Mansoor Delane and Tennessee‘s Jermod McCoy. Like the Giants could be now, Cincinnati was also a popular pick for a first-round cornerback at No. 10.

As for Lawrence, this deal moves him to Cincinnati after 7 years with the Giants. Lawrence posted 9 sacks in 2024 despite playing in just 12 games, but he had a down year as a pass rusher in 2025, totaling just 0.5 sacks. The 3-time pro bowler requested to be traded and he got his wish.

Lawrence is a great veteran player, but this is still a bit of a puzzling move by the Bengals. There is a lot of defensive talent set to be available at No. 10, and Lawrence is nearing 30 years old with a notable asking price. Still, the Bengals needed a stud interior defensive lineman and that’s what they now have.

Maason Smith is on the move ahead of the 2026 NFL season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded the former LSU Tiger. He joins the Atlanta Falcons in a direct swap of defensive tackles, with Ruke Orhorhoro taking his place in Jacksonville.

Smith is entering his third professional season. He was selected by the Jaguars with the No. 48 overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

As a rookie, Smith played in 11 games for Jacksonville, making 5 starts. He recorded 17 total tackles in his professional debut season, including 3 sacks. Smith also added 3 passes defended to his rookie stats.

Last year, Smith played in more games (13), but he only started in 2 games. He recorded 15 total tackles, but without any sacks or TFLs. Smith had 1 pass breakup in his second NFL season.

Smith, from Houma, Louisiana, played 3 seasons with the Tigers. He was named Freshman All-SEC in 2021.

Former Alabama star Will Anderson Jr. has agreed to a 3-year contract extension with the Houston Texans, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The deal is worth a reported $150 million and it includes a no-trade clause. According to Schefter, Anderson is also due $100 million of the $134 guaranteed at signing. The contract makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

Anderson’s $50 million-per-year salary nudges him ahead of fellow pass-rushers Micah Parsons ($46.5 million) and Aidan Hutchinson ($45 million) for the highest-paid non-quarterbacks in the league.

Anderson was the third overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. In just 3 years in the league, he has amassed 30 sacks, 46 tackles for loss, and 64 quarterback hits. He was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting this past season.

The former Crimson Tide star is also a 2-time Pro Bowl selection and a recent All-Pro selection.

His All-Pro nod came this past season, when he recorded a career-best 12 sacks to go along with His 54 tackles, 20 TFLs, 23 QB hits, and 3 forced fumbles. His 85 quarterback pressures were also second in the NFL, according to Next Gen Stats.

The Texans went 12-5 last season. They won a Wild Card game against Pittsburgh, 30-6, but lost in the divisional round of the playoffs to New England.

Jacksonville snapped Houston’s string of 2 straight AFC South divisional titles last season. In 2026, the Texans will be looking for more from their star pass-rusher to help regain control of the division.

It’s almost time for the NFL Draft. We’re officially a week away from Round 1 on April 23, and the experts are fine-tuning their predictions for the first 32 prospects to hear their names called.

On Thursday, Mike Band shared his 2.0 mock draft at NFL.com. He has 9 SEC players going in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Here’s what Band is currently projecting:

 • LSU CB Mansoor Delane — No. 8 (New Orleans Saints)
 • Tennessee CB Jermod McCoy — No. 10 (Cincinnati Bengals)
 • Auburn edge Keldric Faulk — No. 15 (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
 • Georgia OT Monroe Freeling — No. 17 (Detroit Lions)
 • Alabama OT Kadyn Proctor — No. 20 (Cleveland Browns)
 • Texas A&M OG Chase Bisontis — No. 22 (Los Angeles Chargers)
 • Tennessee CB Colton Hood — No. 24 (Dallas Cowboys via trade with Jacksonville Jaguars)
 • Mizzou edge Zion Young — No. 25 (Chicago Bears)
 • Texas A&M WR KC Concepcion — No. 30 (Miami Dolphins)

If Band’s mock is accurate, Round 1 will have a bit of a different feel for SEC fans this year. When it comes to SEC alumni, Band sees primarily defenders and offensive linemen hearing their names called in the first 32 picks. He notably projects only one offensive skill position player (Concepcion) from the SEC as a first-rounder pick this year.

We’re one week away from seeing how things play out. The 2026 NFL Draft is being held in Pittsburgh.

The post Ty Simpson takes last-minute visit with NFL team appeared first on Saturday Down South.

Ty Simpson’s pre-draft NFL tour is taking 1 more spin, as it turns out.

The former Alabama star quarterback, who stands to be 1 of the first signal callers to be selected in next week’s NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, is visiting the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday. ESPN NFL Draft analyst Field Yates posted on his social media that Simpson will meet with the Cardinals on the final day that draft prospects are allowed to visit prospective teams.

Arizona is suddenly in dire need at the quarterback spot after releasing former Texas A&M and Oklahoma standout Kyler Murray last month. Murray spent 7 seasons with the Cardinals after being the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2019. He was thought to be Arizona’s long-term future at the position, and he did finish his time in the desert ranking third in franchise history in passing yards (20,460) and touchdowns (121), as well as second in completions (1,974).

But the Cardinals decided to go in another direction, and with Murray now a member of the Minnesota Vikings, there is 1 giant spot open in Arizona for a new franchise quarterback. Maybe that person is Simpson, who figures to hear his name called pretty early when the draft begins next Thursday night.

Arizona currently holds the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, and the Cardinals’ next pick after that is the second pick in the second round, which is the No. 34 overall selection.

Perhaps one of those two selections will be Simpson, a prospect made a lot more realistic with the news that Simpson is taking this last-minute visit with Arizona.

With the Cardinals now apparently in the mix to draft Simpson, here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the odds for which NFL team will pull the trigger and select the former Alabama star:

Here's a full 7-round mock draft for each of those picks.

The post NFL Mock Draft 2026: Projecting every New Orleans Saints pick appeared first on Saturday Down South.

]]>
The 2026 NFL Draft is rapidly approaching. This year’s draft opens in Pittsburgh on April 23 and the New Orleans Saints hold the No. 8 overall pick in the first round.

New Orleans is coming off a 6-11 season and a last-place finish in the wide-open NFC South. It marked the third time in the last 4 years the franchise finished with a losing record, and the fifth straight season without a playoff appearance.

There is hope, though. The Saints found their quarterback in last year’s draft, selecting former Louisville passer Tyler Shough in the second round. Most draft experts expect the Saints to invest significant capital early in the 2026 draft to surround Shough with more talented targets to throw to.

But New Orleans also has a major need on the edge, with 15-year vet and franchise legend Cam Jordan a free agent in need of a new contract. Whether or not New Orleans re-signs Jordan might not impact the draft strategy; the franchise needs a young pass-rusher to add to the fold.

In total, New Orleans has 8 picks in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. I used the draft simulator tool from Pro Football Focus to run a full, 7-round mock with selections for all 8 picks.

New Orleans Saints mock draft

If I were running the Saints, here’s what I’d do in Pittsburgh.

2026 NFL Draft picks:

 • No. 8 (first round): Edge Rueben Bain Jr., Miami
 • No. 42 (second round): LB Jacob Rodriguez, Texas Tech
 • No. 73 (third round): WR Elijah Sarratt, Indiana
 • No. 132 (fourth round): DB Jalon Kilgore, South Carolina
 • No. 136 (fourth round): WR Ja’Kobi Lane, USC
 • No. 150 (fifth round): CB Devon Marshall, NC State
 • No. 172 (fifth round): C Pat Coogan, Indiana
 • No. 190 (sixth round): LB Harold Perkins Jr., LSU

First Round — Rueben Bain Jr., Miami

The top edge rushers in the class — David Bailey, Arvell Reese — were obviously off the board well before my first pick came around at No. 8. While the prospect of adding Ohio State receiver Carnell Tate to the roster was enticing, this class is loaded with receiver depth that can be plucked later. Edge is less robust after Day 1.

Bain has been knocked a few times throughout the draft process already. His sub-standard arm length was a topic of conversation at the Scouting Combine earlier this year, and over the weekend, news emerged that Bain was cited in a fatal car crash in 2024.

On Monday, Detroit’s general manager said, “We’ve known that for a while,” regarding the citation in the 2024 car crash, and stated that it becoming public now doesn’t change things for them. If the Lions knew, other organizations did as well. Some owners might be worried public sentiment could sour if they spend a premium pick on Bain, but New Orleans has a clear need at the position and Bain is a top-10 talent. The charge against Bain was later dismissed. If he slides in the draft, it would be a surprise.

As a junior, Bain helped Miami make the College Football Playoff national championship game while posting 9.5 sacks, 15.5 tackles for loss, and a nation-leading 83 pressures.

As a replacement for Jordan, or a successor-in-waiting, edge is the pick here for New Orleans and Bain is the top guy on the board.

Kalshi is offering Bain at 19 cents per contract to be the No. 8 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Tate and LSU corner Mansoor Delane are co-favorites (at the time of publication).

Second Round — Jacob Rodriguez, Texas Tech

Rodriguez was my favorite player in this spot for the Saints, so getting him at No. 42 was a dream scenario. A Bain-Rodriguez start to the draft would be an outstanding way for New Orleans to open things up.

New Orleans lost Demario Davis to the Jets in free agency, and they pivoted by signing Kaden Elliss from the Falcons on a 3-year deal with a reported $23 million guaranteed. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis likes to draft a year early for needs, and that might be the case here. The Saints also spent a fourth-round pick on former Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman last year.

But New Orleans will miss Davis’s instincts and leadership at the position. Rodriguez could develop into the next stalwart at off-ball linebacker for the organization. A former quarterback at Virginia, Rodriguez broke out as a tackling machine at Texas Tech in 2024, when he logged 127 tackles. In 2025, he made another 128 tackles while earning a unanimous All-American selection, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award, the Butkus Award, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, and the Chuck Bednarik Award.

Rodriguez can be an every-down starter in the league.

Third Round — Elijah Sarratt, Indiana

Wideouts come off the board with 2 of my next 3 picks as acting Saints GM. Sarratt brings great value in the third round, with a championship pedigree and a nose for the end zone. Sarratt led the FBS with 15 receiving touchdowns in 2025, even though he had to share the spotlight with Omar Cooper. He was a back-shoulder demon, catching balls from Heisman Trophy-winner Fernando Mendoza. Sarratt is a good running mate to pair with Saints receiver Chris Olave.

Fourth Round — Jalon Kilgore, South Carolina

Ohio State standout Caleb Downs is another player who has been heavily linked to New Orleans at No. 8, and it makes a ton of sense. His versatility fits Brandon Staley’s defense wonderfully. Staley’s usage of Derwin James is a nice comp in that regard. And New Orleans needs to replace nickel Alontae Taylor, who left in free agency. Kilgore might be long gone by the time this pick comes around, but he was available for me, and this selection felt like a great way to maximize value. Edge rusher gets filled early with a top talent, and we still land a versatile defensive back who can play several roles in Staley’s defense. Kilgore played all over the field for South Carolina in his career. He’s a good tackler with 8 career interceptions and 21 pass breakups.

Fourth Round — Ja’Kobi Lane, USC

Our second selection of the fourth round is another receiver. While Sarratt is the kind of guy who will be exactly where Shough needs him to be when he needs him to be there, Lane will be the big-bodied guy who can make plays down the field. The former USC receiver has a ton of upside; he posted a 4.47-40, a 40-inch vertical, and a 10-foot-9 broad jump in the pre-draft process, and he ranked in the top 10 among Big Ten receivers for contested catches last season.

Fifth Round — Devon Marshall, NC State

The Saints used a second-round pick in 2024 on former Alabama corner Kool-Aid McKinstry, and they used a 2025 fourth-round pick on former Louisville corner Quincy Riley. I don’t mind adding 2 more defensive backs in this draft if Marshall is on the board. He’s a consistently productive player despite lacking elite athletic traits. He’s also a player who can play man or off-ball coverage. That’ll work for our purposes.

Fifth Round — Pat Coogan, Indiana

Investment in the offensive line has been a priority this offseason for New Orleans. They have a young quarterback to protect and a sputtering run game to rebuild. In free agency, the Saints spent big money on former Bills guard David Edwards and former Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. The message was sent loudly and clearly. With former first-round picks Kelvin Banks and Taliese Fuaga at tackle, adding depth on the interior is a bigger need in this draft. Coogan can play center or guard. He was once a left guard at Notre Dame before starting at center for the title-winning Hoosiers in 2025. He can provide relief as a backup center for Erik McCoy, who is coming off a season-ending bicep tear. Coogan can also provide a challenge for Cesar Ruiz at right guard — the weak link on the New Orleans line.

Sixth Round — Harold Perkins Jr., LSU

Why not? Perkins was a quarterback’s worst nightmare as a freshman at LSU. If he were 6-foot-3 instead of his listed 6-foot-1, we’d be talking about a Day 1 or 2 edge rushing talent. Injuries and position uncertainty deflated his status as his career went along at LSU, but this feels like a pick worth making on a homegrown talent late in the draft.

Jawaan Taylor has found a new home. The former Florida offensive lineman is heading to Atlanta for his 8th season in the NFL.

The Falcons officially announced the signing on Friday. Earlier in the week, ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared that Taylor is joining the club on a 1-year deal with a base value of $5 million and an additional $1 million in incentives. Atlanta pursued Taylor as a replacement for retiring offensive lineman Kaleb McGary.

It’s the second move of Taylor’s professional career. He began his career in Jacksonville and was later acquired by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Jaguars selected Taylor No. 35 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. Taylor started every game for the Jaguars over 4 seasons (66 regular-season, 2 playoff). Jacksonville finished top-10 in rushing yards per play during the 2021 and ’22 seasons.

Entering Year 5, Taylor landed a megadeal with the Chiefs. In March 2023, Kansas City inked Taylor to a 4-year, $80 million contract that included $60 million guaranteed. Before the end of the contract, however, Taylor was let go. He collected his first Super Bowl ring in his first season with the Chiefs.

The Atlanta Falcons made the easy decision to pick up the 5th year on Bijan Robinson’s rookie contract.

As a first-round selection, Robinson’s fifth year comes up for decision ahead of his fourth professional season. On Friday, the club announced that it is exercising the fifth-year option.

It’s safe to consider Friday’s announcement a formality of a decision that was made long ago. Robinson is off to a stellar start in Atlanta.

Selected No. 8 overall out of Texas in the 2023 NFL Draft, Robinson has already collected numerous honors, including multiple Pro Bowls and All-Pro recognition, as a Falcon. In 51 games, Robinson has over 5,500 yards of total offense and 34 career touchdowns.

Robinson was named to the PFWA’s All-Rookie Team in 2023. He rushed 214 times for 976 yards and 4 touchdowns in his debut season, adding 58 catches for 487 yards and 4 scores.

In 2024, Robinson upped his rushing touchdown mark to 14, a career-high. He logged 304 carries, the most in his 3-year career, for 1,456 yards. He continued to be used in the passing game, as well, adding 61 catches for 431 yards and 1 TD.

Last season was a career year in many ways for Robinson. He posted career highs in rushing yards (1,478), yards per carry (5.1), receptions (79) and receiving yards (820). The banner year earned Robinson his first All-Pro selection.

Those SEC players are Alabama‘s Ty Simpson and Kadyn Proctor, Tennessee‘s Colton Hood, LSU‘s Mansoor Delane, and Auburn‘s Keldric Faulk. The other prospects are David Bailey, Colton Hood, Arvelle Reese, Rueben Bain Jr., Makai Lemon, Jeremiyah Love, Sonny Styles, Caleb Downs, Francis Mauigoa, Carnell Tate, Kayden McDonald, and Jordyn Tyson.

Delane, a cornerback who spent his first three seasons at Virginia Tech, is slotted for No. 8 by the New Orleans Saints in Yahoo Sports’ mock draft. Delane amassed two interceptions, 11 pass deflections, and 28 solo tackles last season.

The Cowboys are projected by Yahoo to select Faulk at No. 12 overall. The edge had two sacks, a fumble recovery, four pass deflections, and 23 solo tackles last season. The cornerback Hood is also tabbed for the Dallas Cowboys at the No. 20 selection. Hood had an interception, forced fumble, eight pass deflections, and 34 solo tackles last season.

Yahoo Sports has Proctor going No. 24 to the Cleveland Browns. The massive offensive lineman particularly excelled in run blocking, which Yahoo notes could be beneficial for the Browns.

Simpson is projected by Yahoo Sports to be selected by the Arizona Cardinals with the No. 31 pick. Simpson passed for 3,567 yards with 28 touchdowns and five interceptions last season.

Last season, the SEC had a staggering 15 first-round picks, beginning with LSU offensive lineman to the New England Patriots at No. 4 overall.

Kalen DeBoer coached a first-round NFL Draft pick at quarterback at his last school, and he might have another at his current school if things go Alabama’s way later this month.

After a lone season as the Alabama starting quarterback, Simpson is looking to become the program’s first first-round passer since 2023. The worst-kept secret of this year’s draft is that Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza will go first overall. Most assume Simpson is QB2 in this class, but few are in agreement about where specifically Simpson will go.

During a SportsCenter hit on Thursday, DeBoer said Simpson shouldn’t fall out of the first round.

“Just been around it long enough,” Kalen DeBoer said. “He’s made so many great plays, big plays. He can deliver the ball wherever he needs to down the field. Has great football IQ.”

DeBoer added that Simpson “cut loose” and let his leadership shine once he officially won the starting quarterback job last offseason.

“So many things that are on the field and off the field that just equate to a guy that you’d want in your program leading your team,” DeBoer said.

Simpson threw for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns against 5 interceptions as a starter in 2025.

The first round of the 2026 NFL Draft takes place on April 23 in Pittsburgh.

This year’s NFL Draft, which kicks off later this month in Pittsburgh, looks like it’ll be lighter on SEC talent than most first rounds in recent history.

Nowhere is that more clear than in ESPN insider Peter Schrager’s latest Round 1 mock draft, which only features 6 SEC standouts going in the first 32 picks.

Most mocks have between 8 and 12 SEC stars going in Round 1, but from what Schrager is hearing, that number could be a bit lower. Here are the half-dozen players from the SEC he has in his mock:

 • No. 10 — Mansoor Delane, CB, LSU — Cincinnati Bengals
 • No. 15 — Jermod McCoy, CB, Tennessee — Tampa Bay Buccaneers
 • No. 19 — Monroe Freeling, OL, Georgia — Carolina Panthers
 • No. 24 — KC Concepcion, WR, Texas A&M — Cleveland Browns
 • No. 25 — Kadyn Proctor, OL, Alabama — Chicago Bears
 • No. 29 — Colton Hood, CB, Tennessee — Kansas City Chiefs

Time is running out for players to make a last push to improve their draft stocks. We’ll see what happens as Thursday, April 23, quickly approaches.

Who will go in the top 10 of this year’s NFL Draft? Will we see at least 1 SEC player? Will 2 be drafted in the first 10? Here’s a look at the latest Kalshi market:

Ex-Vanderbilt star Diego Pavia has visit scheduled with NFL team, per report https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/nfl/ex-vanderbilt-star-diego-pavia-has-visit-scheduled-with-nfl-team-per-report/ Tue, 07 Apr 2026 20:06:28 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=558516 Ex-Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia is looking toward the NFL Draft in a few weeks, and he reportedly has a visit lined up with an NFL team.

The post Ex-Vanderbilt star Diego Pavia has visit scheduled with NFL team, per report appeared first on Saturday Down South.

]]>
Ex-Vanderbilt star quarterback Diego Pavia has big dreams that are pointed toward the NFL Draft on April 23 in Pittsburgh, and the signal caller who put Commodores football on the map the past 2 seasons is doing everything in his power during the leadup to the draft.

According to a report on Tuesday morning by NFL.com insider Ian Rapoport, the 2025 SEC Offensive Player of the Year had a visit lined up with the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday. The Panthers currently hold the 19th pick in the first round of the draft.

Because Pavia played 6 years of college football, he’s a little older than the average NFL rookie-to-be, turning 24 in February. But Pavia didn’t explode onto the college football scene until he transferred from New Mexico State to Vandy, where in 2 years he transformed a mostly moribund football program into a factor in the SEC.

During those 2 special seasons in Nashville, Pavia threw 49 touchdown passes and just 12 interceptions. After throwing for 2,293 yards during his first season at Vanderbilt in 2024, he stepped it up even more in 2025 with 3,539 yards through the air.

Passing was only half of his dynamic as a player, with Pavia piling up the rushing yards, too. He rushed for an even 800 yards in 2024 and matched that in 2025 with 862 yards on the ground, combining for 18 rushing touchdowns in those 2 seasons at Vandy.

He was invited to New York City last December as a Heisman Trophy finalist and nearly won the prestigious trophy, finishing second to Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza. Now, Pavia is trying to make his case that he’s an NFL quarterback despite his short stature. That case reportedly continued on Tuesday with Pavia’s visit to Carolina.

Pavia turned Vanderbilt into a relevant force in the SEC the past 2 seasons, but now the Commodores will look to contend for a conference title without him. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about those top teams in the mix to win the 2026 SEC championship come December:

Christen Miller has awesome reaction to Travon Walker extension news https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/nfl/christen-miller-has-awesome-reaction-to-travon-walker-extension-news/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 17:32:27 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=557772 One of the Bulldogs' latest NFL defensive line prospects was in disbelief when he heard the news about his friend's contract.

When someone from your inner circle accomplishes something, their success can translate into fuel for your fire. It enhances your own belief that you can achieve your dreams. That’s what Travon Walker’s recent extension has done for Georgia defensive tackle Christen Miller.

Friday afternoon, NFL Network was interviewing Miller for their evening episode of The Insiders. During the taping, Ian Rapoport received news that former No. 1 pick Travon Walker, a Georgia alum, had signed a 4-year, $110 million extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars. When Rapoport gave Miller the news, the 2026 NFL Draft prospect couldn’t contain the excitement for his friend and mentor.

“How much?! A hundred [million]?! Whooo, hoo hoo,” an ecstatic Miller reacted. “That’s what I call four pockets full… he’s four pockets full right now… that’s a blessing.”

After the initial wave, Miller dove into Walker’s path to prominence at Georgia. He recapped how Walker built himself from a rotational piece to foundational defender in college, and how he has translated his game to the professional ranks.

“People don’t understand his story… the first year, he didn’t start at Georgia. Second year, was in the rotation… the third year, he hit the ground running,” Miller said. “From there, he ain’t stopped since. He has been a double-digit sack guy in the league… that’s what I look up to… just hearing that, that just makes me want to go harder. Shoutout Travon… congrats to you, brother.”

Miller won’t go No. 1 overall, but a handful of mock drafts have projected him to be selected late in the first round. ESPN ranks Miller as the No. 49 overall prospect (No. 4 DT) in this year’s draft. The 2026 NFL Draft begins on Apr. 23.

Travon Walker and the Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to a 4-year contract extension, Walker’s agency announced on Friday.

The former Georgia standout will earn $110 million over the length of the contract, with $77 million in guarantees, including $50 million due at signing. Walker appeared in 63 games with 27.5 sacks over his first 4 seasons in the NFL.

The deal is much less than the one Detroit recently gave Aidan Hutchinson, who was picked after Walker on draft day. Hutchinson, who has 43 sacks since entering the league, fetched a 4-year, $180 million deal with $141 million guaranteed last November.

Walker was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. He had just 3.5 sacks as a rookie, but broke out in his second season, with 10 sacks in 17 games. Walker produced a career-best 61 tackles and 10.5 sacks during the 2024 season.

In 2025, he played in just 14 games and recorded only 3.5 sacks. Walker wasn’t completely healthy, though. He played through a broken left hand and a right knee injury throughout the campaign.

A return to form in 2026 seems to be what Jacksonville is banking on. Walker might not yet be the dominant force the Jags expected when they took him with the top pick in 2022, but he does have 27.5 sacks and 57 quarterback hits in his first 4 years in the league.

The 2026 NFL Draft will take place later this month in Pittsburgh.

One major storyline is the future destination for ex-Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, who is expected to be the second quarterback off the board in this year’s draft after Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza.

Simpson’s landing spot, though, is still very much up for debate. NFL Draft analyst Chad Reuter published his latest mock on Friday afternoon and has Simpson going off the board at No. 16 overall to the New York Jets. Here’s his analysis:

The Jets need a quarterback and Simpson is still on the board. There is sufficient depth at receiver and cornerback in this draft that the team could address both early in the second round while still securing the second-best passer in the draft in Simpson.

On prediction markets like Kalshi, users can make predictions on what team will pick Simpson on draft day. As of publication, the Jets are the second-favorite to draft Simpson behind only the Arizona Cardinals.

However, teams like the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers are also viable landing spots.

Here’s the latest market for Simpson on Kalshi:

Former South Carolina defensive back Stephon Gilmore, one of the best defensive players of the 2010s, announced on Thursday that he will be retiring from football after 13 professional seasons.

Gilmore was the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots. After being drafted No. 10 overall and spending 5 seasons with the Buffalo Bills, Gilmore played 4 years with the Patriots, and 1 year each with the Panthers, Colts, Cowboys and Vikings.

Gilmore announced his retirement with the following video, with a message at the end reading, “The game ends here, but the journey continues.”

Gilmore played 3 seasons at South Carolina before going on to dominate the NFL. He played as a freshman under Steve Spurrier, seeing consistent action in Years 1, 2 and 3. By the time his career in Columbia was over, Gilmore had accrued 8 interceptions, 15 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 181 combined tackles across 40 games played.

Gilmore appeared in 5 pro bowls and was named a first team All-Pro member twice. For his career, Gilmore totaled 617 tackles, 32 interceptions, 7 forced fumbles, 149 pass deflections, 2 defensive touchdowns and 1 sack.

ESPN’s Matt Miller predicts when Ty Simpson will be picked in NFL Draft https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/nfl/espns-matt-miller-predicts-when-ty-simpson-will-be-picked-in-nfl-draft/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 02:09:26 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=557391 With growing buzz around Ty Simpson entering the NFL Draft, ESPN's Matt Miller laid down his prediction for where the QB will end up.

The post ESPN’s Matt Miller predicts when Ty Simpson will be picked in NFL Draft appeared first on Saturday Down South.

]]>
With the top of this quarterback class being considered somewhat shallow when it comes to high-caliber prospects, Alabama’s Ty Simpson has progressively garnered more and more buzz as the pre-draft process has gone on.

Following a strong showing at the Crimson Tide’s annual Pro Day, scouts and draft experts alike began to move Simpson up their boards, and ESPN’s Matt Miller supported that notion in his recent seven-round mock draft.

Like our coverage? Make SDS a preferred source in your searches!

Miller didn’t quite have Simpson going in the first round, but he made the Alabama signal-caller the very first selection in the second round. He foresees the New York Jets picking up Simpson and believes the organization would likely opt to let the QB develop for a season and reevaluate from that point.

There could be calls for the Jets to trade up into Round 1 to secure a fifth-year option on Simpson, but trading away picks in the 2027 draft, which is expected to be the most talent-rich in recent history, wouldn’t be smart. New York can take him here, allow him a year to develop behind Geno Smith, then evaluate his future. Simpson is a talented distributor who is accurate in a clean pocket but struggled down the stretch. His questionable decision-making could drop him to Round 2.

Simpson’s issues in the closing moments of the season are well-documented, but it’s also tough to discredit his production while working within one of the toughest leagues in the country. He threw for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns while only tossing 5 interceptions last year, which occurred after biding his time in the Alabama program for 3 seasons.

Most NFL analysts predict about 10-12 former SEC standouts will hear their names called in Round 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft later this month in Pittsburgh.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein is not among that group. Zierlein released his updated Round 1 mock draft this week, and he only had 8 former SEC stars going in the first 32 picks.

As you can see below, he has 2 SEC standouts going in the top 10. Tennessee leads the way with 2 first-round picks in this mock:

 • No. 6 — Monroe Freeling, OL, Georgia — Cleveland Browns
 • No. 7 — Mansoor Delane, CB, LSU — Washington Commanders
 • No. 17 — Kadyn Proctor, OL, Alabama — Detroit Lions
 • No. 18 — Jermod McCoy, CB, Tennessee — Minnesota Vikings

 • No. 27 — KC Concepcion, WR, Texas A&M — San Francisco 49ers
 • No. 28 — Anthony Hill Jr., LB, Texas — Houston Texans

Will Zierlein be proven right about the SEC not having as many Round 1 picks as normal? We’ll find out on Thursday, April 23, when Pittsburgh hosts the annual extravaganza.

It’s not an April Fool’s Day prank. Hendon Hooker is heading back to the Volunteer State and will sign with the Tennessee Titans, according to a report from NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.

Hooker was most recently on the New York Jets’ practices quad, but will now back up Cam Ward in Nashville as the Titans embark on a new era. Tennessee recently updated its logo and jerseys and will be moving into a new stadium in 2027.

Of course, Hooker and the Volunteer State go way back. The former Vols QB was on trajectory to compete for a Heisman trophy before suffering a season-ending knee injury late in 2022. Across his 2 seasons at Tennessee, Hooker threw for over 6,000 yards, 58 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions while rushing for 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Hooker then took his talents to the NFL, where he’s seen limited action. He was originally drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions and spent 2 seasons with Detroit before being waived. He saw limited stints with the Panthers and Jets before Schultz’s report on Wednesday.

Todd Monken was not present for the NFL’s annual head coach photo, which was taken following a league meeting on Monday in Phoenix, Arizona.

Monken (who coaches the Browns) and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay were the only NFL head coaches to miss the group photo. Here’s a look:

According to the former Georgia offensive coordinator, the reason he missed the photo is pretty ironic. As he told reporters on Tuesday, Monken missed the photo because he was getting his hair cut… for the photo. The 30 head coaches present held their meeting, which let out early, then took the photo immediately afterwards, which was 20 minutes earlier than the posted time of Noon on the agenda, per Monken.

Brutal.

Monken is entering his first year as head coach of the Cleveland Browns after serving as Baltimore’s offensive coordinator from 2023-2025. Before that, as Georgia fans know, Monken served as OC under Kirby Smart, overseeing Stetson Bennett IV and Georgia’s 2x national titles.

Monken’s coaching experience goes well beyond that. He has over 35 years of coaching experience in total, having made stops at Southern Miss (HC), Oklahoma State (pass game coordinator), LSU (pass game coordinator) and in the NFL with the Buccaneers, Jaguars and Browns, where he was the OC in 2019.

The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots are the next 2 teams to be featured on Hard Knocks, a series that documents an NFL team’s training camp and preparations for the upcoming year before the start of regular season action.

Seattle, the defending Super Bowl champions, are on the docket for this offseason. The Seahawks are the first team since the Baltimore Ravens in 2001 to be featured on Hard Knocks after winning the Super Bowl the season prior. Keep in mind, there used to be a rule that stated the HBO series could not cover a team that reached the playoffs the season prior. That rule has since been changed, obviously.

Seattle is set to be strong once again in 2026, too. Jaxon Smith-Njigba and several members of a tough Seahawks defense will be back in the Emerald City, looking to defend their dominant run to the Super Bowl in 2025, where they beat the New England Patriots.

As mentioned, New England will be the Hard Knocks feature in 2027. The Patriots will be looking to continue the Hard Knocks champion streak too, as Drake Maye and Co. are set to be among the strongest teams in the NFL entering 2026.

Most recently, Hard Knocks covered the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

The 2026 NFL Draft is less than a month away. The annual event will be held in Pittsburgh, and while there won’t be as much SEC talent taken in the top 10 as there normally is, there are still plenty of former SEC stars who will hear their names called in Round 1.

Veteran defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard is set for an 11th NFL season, as the former Florida standout has reportedly signed a 1-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys.

Bullard’s agent Jon Perzley told NFL Network that the 32-year-old signed a contract worth a maximum of $2.5 million – a deal inked on the same day as his late grandmother Joyce’s birthday – fitting because she was a “hollering at the TV” Cowboys fan.

Bullard, who was a third-round pick in 2016, will be joining his seventh NFL team. He played his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears, spend a year each with the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons, put in three more seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and then played last season with the New Orleans Saints.

Bullard recorded 26 total tackles with 12 solo stops in 2025, adding six passes defended. In his career, Bullard has notched 247 tackles with 144 solo stops, 6½ sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 10 passes defended.

A first-team All-SEC pick in 2015, Bullard had 35 starts over three seasons in Gainesville with 169 tackles, 30½ tackles for loss and 11 sacks.

With the addition of Bullard, the Cowboys have now added seven external players on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. Bullard is the third addition on the defensive line, joining nose tackle Otito Ogbonnia and outside linebacker Rashan Gary.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid weighs in on when Ty Simpson could be drafted https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/nfl/espns-jordan-reid-weighs-in-on-when-ty-simpson-could-be-drafted/ Sat, 28 Mar 2026 01:52:54 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=556381 Ty Simpson has drawn mixed reviews for his first-round potential and an ESPN expert is now weighing in on the topic.

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson has drawn plenty of attention from scouts and gurus as the 2026 NFL Draft approaches.

Simpson guided Alabama to the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff in his lone full year as a starter last season. Now, he’s being tabbed as a potential first-round pick. However, ESPN’s Jordan Reid isn’t as high on Simpson.

Like our coverage? Make SDS a preferred source in your searches!

During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Reid addressed the chatter that the New York Jets could select Simpson with the No. 16 pick. Simpson had a private workout with the Jets after the Alabama Pro Day. Yet, Reid cited Simpson’s minimal starting experience as a deterrent for being first-round worthy.

“I just don’t see Ty Simpson being that first round quarterback. I feel more comfortable taking him in the second round but of course the quality of this year’s quarterback class is not great as you guys know,” Reid said. “Teams salivate over these quarterbacks. The Jets at 16, I just think it’s a huge risk.”

The 6-foot-2, 208-pound Simpson passed for 3,567 yards with 28 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 145.2 passer rating last season en route to Alabama finishing with an 11-4 record.

Alabama’s last five quarterbacks have all been selected in the top 92 picks. Simpson looks to join Bryce Young (No. 1 in 2023), Tua Tagovailoa (No. 5 in 2020) and Mac Jones (No. 15 in 2021) from that group as another first-round selection.

Don’t go counting Mel Kiper Jr. as a huge Ty Simpson fan, at least compared to Shedeur Sanders.

The long-time ESPN NFL Draft expert got a bit testy with Field Yates recently on First Draft when Yates said that Sanders’ Cleveland Browns were among the teams that need to figure out how to grade Simpson – the Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback last season – before the 2026 NFL Draft begins April 23 in Pittsburgh.

“The Browns don’t have to worry about Ty Simpson, Kiper retorted while shaking his head. “They got a better quarterback than Ty Simpson in Shedeur Sanders. Don’t go there.”

Sanders entered the NFL last season after a collegiate career that started at Jackson State and ended at Colorado – all while being coached by his Hall of Fame father Deion Sanders. The younger Sanders infamously dropped from a potential first-round selection all the way to the fifth round before being taken by Cleveland.

Sanders started his rookie NFL season in 2026 as a third-stringer behind Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel before earning his first start in Week 12. Sanders finished the season at QB1 for Cleveland, throwing for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns against 10 interceptions in eight appearances.

Simpson started 15 games for Alabama in 2025-26, his lone season as QB1 for the Crimson Tide, throwing for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns against five interceptions.

Tom Brady just doesn’t know how to quit the NFL.

The future Pro Football Hall of Famer, full owner of seven Super Bowl rings and minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, Brady told CNBC in a recent interview that he inquired with the league about a potential return to the field despite his stake in the Raiders.

“I actually have inquired, and they don’t like that idea very much,” Brady said in an interview this week promoting his World Cup ad campaign with CNBC Sport. “We explored a lot of different things, and I’m very happily retired. Let me just say that, too.”

The NFL told CNBC that if Brady were to pursue a return to the league, he would first need to divest his ownership stake in the Raiders – citing a 2023 policy that prohibits players or team employees from taking equity in a club. The league also said that there would be additional player/owner salary cap issues involved as well.

Brady, who won Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 23-season career before hanging them up in 2023 at age 45, said that he has helped the Raiders front office make personnel and coaching decisions in what he called a “strategic advisory role.”

Brady is also employed as a broadcaster with FOX.

With the NFL Draft coming up next month, speculation continues on which team will take former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. On Wednesday, it was revealed that a club with multiple first-round picks will host Simpson for a workout on Friday.

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, Simpson is set to work out for the New York Jets. They hold the Nos. 2 and 16 picks in the first round of the NFL Draft.

It has been a busy week for headlines featuring Simpson’s name. Yates released a mock draft on Tuesday, projecting that the Arizona Cardinals make a trade to get a late-Round 1 pick and grab Simpson at No. 26. That would make Simpson QB2 in the 2026 NFL Draft class, behind Fernando Mendoza. ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky turned heads when he declared Simpson to be QB1 over Mendoza on Monday’s edition of Get Up.

The Denver Broncos have acquired former Alabama receiver Jaylen Waddle from the Miami Dolphins, according to a report.

The deal comes at a steep price. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos are sending out their 1st and 3rd round selections in this spring’s NFL Draft. The Broncos and Dolphins are also swapping 4th round picks as part of the deal.

Waddle spent the first 5 years of his NFL career with the Dolphins. He began his career with 3 consecutive 1,000+ receiving yard seasons, but has tailed off over the past couple of years due to Tua Tagovailoa’s injury and consistency issues.

In 2025, Waddle caught 64 of his 100 targets for 910 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Denver will be hoping Waddle can get back to his peak, which came in 2022. That year, he went for 1,356 receiving yards and was arguably the best deep threat in football. He led the NFL with over 18 yards per reception in 2022.

Waddle joins a Broncos offense that’s led by quarterback Bo Nix. Denver runs a pass-heavy scheme, as Nix led the NFL in pass attempts during his 2025 campaign.

The Broncos went 14-3 in 2025 and earned the No. 1 seed in the AFC, but lost in the playoffs after Nix suffered a season-ending injury. Denver will have Super Bowl aspirations once again this upcoming season and Waddle will be a big part of those efforts.

Former Mississippi State standout cornerback Darius Slay, who went on to a fruitful pro career that included 6 trips to the Pro Bowl, is calling it quits after 13 years in the NFL.

Slay, who was a second-team All-SEC selection in 2012 during his 2-year run in Starkville, wrote a heartfelt retirement message on his Instagram account on Monday.

“I’ve been blessed to play the game I loved since I was 5yrs old for an amazing 13yrs at the highest level,” wrote Slay in his post that included video of all of the jerseys he’s worn during his football life, including that Mississippi State uniform during his 2 years in Starkville in 2011 and 2012.

“Football was my peace, my joy, my everything,” wrote Slay.

The 35-year-old Brunswick, Ga., native reached the pinnacle of pro football with the Philadelphia Eagles, winning a Super Bowl with the Eagles during his final season in Philadelphia in 2024. Slay spent 5 years with the Eagles between 2020-24 after coming over from the Detroit Lions, who selected Slay out of Mississippi State in the second round of the 2013 draft.

Slay spent 7 seasons with the Lions between 2013-19, earning Pro Bowl appearances in 2017, 2018 and 2019 while being selected as a first-team All-Pro in 2017. He earned 3 more Pro Bowl selections with the Eagles, capping his time off in Philadelphia with that precious Super Bowl victory.

After 1 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025 that turned out to be his final year in the NFL, Slay is riding off into the sunset, grateful for what the game gave to him. Slay played in just 10 games with the Steelers before being cut, and when the Buffalo Bills picked Slay up off waivers, he declined to report to the Bills.

With Slay contemplating retirement or a return to the NFL in 2026, he ultimately decided to call it quits, with that touching Instagram message being his football sign off.

While Slay heads off into the sunset, the next crop of NFL hopefuls gets ready to hear their names called next month in Pittsburgh at the NFL Draft. Here is what the Kalshi market sees as the most likely names to be taken off the board in the first 10 picks of the draft:

The post Ex-Texas A&M star KC Concepcion undergoes knee scope in leadup to draft, per report appeared first on Saturday Down South.

]]>
Ex-Texas A&M star wideout KC Concepcion is apparently taking care of some last-minute business with his body before he potentially becomes one of the top players taken in next month’s NFL Draft in Pittsburgh.

According to a report on Monday afternoon by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Concepcion underwent “a knee scope described as routine and preventative.” Garafolo also reported that Dallas Cowboys team physician Daniel Cooper performed the scope last week.

Concepcion spent only 1 season in College Station after transferring from NC State, where he played in 2023 and 2024. The 21-year-old native of Rochester, N.Y., is “projected by many as a first-round pick,” according to Garafolo, who also reported that Concepcion is “expected to be 100% for rookie camp.”

The million-dollar question, of course, maybe literally, is what NFL team will get its hands on Concepcion next month in Pittsburgh, after the 5-foot-11, 190-pounder who starred in high school in Charlotte made his 1 season at Texas A&M count. Concepcion hauled in 61 passes for 919 yards and 9 touchdowns last season, helping the Aggies reach the College Football Playoff.

Concepcion earned first-team All-SEC honors as a wide receiver, all-purpose player and return specialist, capturing the Paul Hornung Award, which rewards versatility.

NC State also got the best of Concepcion, who caught 71 passes for the Wolfpack in 2023 and 53 more in 2024. He combined for 16 touchdown catches during his 2 seasons in Raleigh.

With Concepcion gone from College Station, he is now in the mix to be one of the top draft picks next month in Pittsburgh. Here is what the Kalshi market currently sees as the players with the best shot to be a top-10 draft pick in 2026:

Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. had four charges brought against him on Thursday by the Miami-Dade State Attorney regarding the Feb. 7 incident with WNBA player Rickea Jackson, according to a court document obtained by ESPN.

The 22-year-old Pearce Jr., who played collegiately at Tennessee, has been charged with three felonies. Those charges are aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police and resisting an officer with violence to his or her person.

Meanwhile, a fourth arrest charge of felony aggravated stalking was switched to a misdemeanor. Pearce Jr. also had his arrest charge of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer dropped.

Pearce Jr. was arrested and was held overnight in a county correctional center prior to paying a $20,500 bond and being released on Feb. 8.

The 6-foot-5, 243-pound Pearce Jr. was drafted by the Falcons with the 26th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. During his first pro season, Pearce Jr. tallied 10.5 sacks with a forced fumble and fumble recovery en route to making the PFWA All-Rookie team.

Pearce Jr. played for Tennessee from 2022 to 2024. The Charlotte, North Carolina native was a back-to-back First-team All-SEC member in 2023 and 2024.

Former Texas A&M specialist Braden Mann has landed a multi-year extension with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Mann’s extension is for four years at $14 million, along with $7 million in guaranteed money.

The 28-year-old Mann has punted for the Eagles since being waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2023 offseason. Mann punted twice during the Eagles’ 40-22 victory vs. the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.

Mann previously inked a two-year extension with the Eagles in 2024. During the 2024 season, Mann earned NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors after the Eagles’ 24–19 against the Baltimore Ravens. Mann had six punts for 307 yards with a long of 58 during that performance.

The New York Jets drafted Mann in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Mann led the NFL in punting yards his rookie season with 3,598.

Mann earned plenty of accolades while at Texas A&M. He won the Ray Guy Award, was a unanimous All-America selection, a first-team All-SEC member and the SEC Special Teams Player of the Year in 2018. During that campaign, Mann led the nation in punting average per game (50.9), which broke the single-season mark by LSU’s Chad Kessler (50.2) from 1997.

Former Oklahoma quarterback and 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray has a new NFL home, reportedly heading to the Minnesota Vikings on a one-year contract just a day after being released by the Arizona Cardinals.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Murray’s move will trigger an open competition with JJ McCarthy for the Vikings’ starting spot. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season in 2024 after a preseason meniscus tear in his knee and then missed seven games in 2025 with an ankle sprain and then a concussion.

Murray played just five games for the Cardinals in 2025 but sustained a foot injury in Week 5 against the Titans. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Murray was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 after setting several Cardinals franchise rookie quarterback records. He also made the Pro Bowl in 2020 and 2021 and led Arizona to the playoffs in 2021.

Murray’s tenure in Arizona ends with him throwing for 20,460 yards and 121 touchdowns against 60 interceptions. His 67.1 completion rate ranks fifth all-time in the NFL with at least 1,500 pass attempts.

After a freshman season at Texas A&M in 2015, Murray transferred to Oklahoma in 2016 and earned the starting spot in 2018 – throwing for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns as the Sooners went 13-1 and earned a spot in the four-team College Football Playoff.

Maxx Crosby trade from Raiders to Ravens falls apart due to reported ‘medical concerns’ https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/nfl/maxx-crosby-trade-from-raiders-to-ravens-falls-apart-due-to-reported-medical-concerns/ Wed, 11 Mar 2026 01:04:01 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=552545 Maxx Crosby's trade from the Raiders to the Ravens is off, with 'medical concerns' reportedly causing Baltimore to back out.

The post Maxx Crosby trade from Raiders to Ravens falls apart due to reported ‘medical concerns’ appeared first on Saturday Down South.

Maxx Crosby was reportedly set to be traded from the Las Vegas Raiders, a team he had called home since entering the NFL in 2019, to the Baltimore Ravens. The deal would become official as soon as Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, the start of the new NFL year.

On Tuesday night ET, though, the Raiders posted this terse statement to their social media channels:

The news sent shockwaves across the NFL world. The two-time Pro Bowler, one of the top pass rushers in the league, was in search of a change in scenery after declining to go through a rebuild in Vegas, one that would be headlined by the Raiders’ apparent selection of Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in April. Crosby even posted a goodbye message to Raiders fans on social media on Saturday.

Now, that trade is off.

During a physical, the Ravens were reportedly spooked by “medical concerns” that caused them to nix the deal, according to ESPN’s Ryan McFadden. There’s no word on the specifics of those concerns, but Crosby had undergone a meniscus repair surgery in January to correct an injury he had been carrying throughout 2025. He still posted 10.0 sacks in 15 games. In 2024, he was limited by an ankle injury.

Now, according to McFadden, the Raiders are set to “try to figure out their next steps” during a Tuesday night meeting as their bid to send their star player to the AFC North has fallen apart.

Where will Maxx Crosby go from here after his failed trade to the Ravens? Kalshi is taking action on his next move.

Former South Carolina tight end Hayden Hurst is calling it a career after 7 seasons in the NFL. Hurst played for 5 teams across that span after being drafted late in the first round by John Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens.

Hurst, 32, announced his retirement on Monday:

“It is a blessing how far sports took me in this life,” Hurst wrote on Instagram. “When I was stuck in a dorm room at 18 years old in Pirate City, thinking my sports career was over, I never thought I’d turn it into a 7 year NFL career but l put my head down and worked. I was determined to make football work after baseball failed me, and I never let anyone tell me I couldn’t do anything.”

Hurst put together a solid career as a journeyman. He saw most of his success come in Atlanta, where he accumulated just under 800 yards receiving with 9 touchdowns across 2 seasons. Hurst also played in a Super Bowl with the Cincinnati Bengal in 2022, but fell just short at the hands of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Before his time in the NFL, Hurst put together a few great seasons at South Carolina. He totaled over 500 yards receiving across both of his final 2 seasons in Columbia with 3 touchdown receptions.

]]>
Tua Tagovailoa, after spending 6 seasons with the Miami Dolphins, is expected to sign a 1-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, according to NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Tagovailoa, a former Alabama quarterback who tore Georgia fans’ hearts out with a game-winning throw in the 2018 national championship game, needed a change of scenery in a bad way. He spent 6 years with Miami and suffered multiple injuries, including several concussions that put his career in serious jeopardy.

Atlanta is a great landing place for Tagovailoa, who will compete with Michael Penix — another left-handed quarterback — in the Falcons’ system. Atlanta announced a few weeks ago that it would be parting with backup Kirk Cousins.

Tagovailoa put together some great seasons in Miami, specifically 2022 and 2023. The former Alabama quarterback threw for 4,624 yards with 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 2023, but fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card round. For his career, Tagovailoa has so far totaled 18,166 yards, 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions across 6 seasons.

As it currently stands, Atlanta has a 21% chance to win the NFC South in 2026. Here’s a look at the odds for other NFC South teams, per Kalshi:

A massive day in NFL free agency just saw a major splash. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers pro bowl wide receiver Mike Evans is reportedly set to sign a 3-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, according to several reports.

Evans is a 12-year NFL veteran, praised and well-known for his high-end consistency. Before an injury derailed his 2025 season, Evans had strung together 11 straight seasons of finishing with more than 1,000 receiving yards. Last year, Evans totaled 30 receptions for 368 yards and 3 touchdowns across 8 games of action.

Evans’ deal is a big one. The 49ers are signing Evans to a 3-year deal worth $60 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Here’s a statement from Evans’ agent Deryk Gilmore, which says that Evans took the offer from San Francisco in free agency to challenge himself while he still has some gas left in the tank. Check it out:

That consistency that made Evans a lot of money with Tampa and now San Francisco was present in college, too. Evans played 2 seasons in College Station with Texas A&M, totaling 151 receptions for 2,499 yards and 17 touchdowns combined. He totaled more than 1,000 yards both seasons, making sure the 1,000-yard standard was set early.

The 49ers’ current odds to reach the postseason next year sit at 52% as of early March. Here’s a look at some more of the top odds:

Kenneth Walker III is on the move after winning a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks and being named the game’s MVP. According to multiple reports, Walker is signing with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Walker’s deal is huge news on a busy day of NFL free agency. After 4 seasons in Seattle, he’ll play his fifth season in Kansas City.

As a Seahawk, Walker’s best seasons were his first and last. Seattle selected Walker No. 41 overall in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

In his debut season, Walker made the PFWA’s All-Rookie Team. He posted the best rushing numbers of his career in the regular season, carrying the ball 228 times for 1,050 yards and 9 touchdowns.

After sub-1,000-yard seasons in 2023 and ’24, Walker hit the mark again in 2025. A 17-game starter, he rushed 221 times for 1,027 yards and 5 touchdowns. In Seattle’s championship run, Walker had a postseason to remember with 65 carries for 313 yards and 4 touchdowns.

For his career, Walker has rushed 821 times in the regular season for 3,555 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also has 80 postseason carries for 376 yards and 5 scores.

The post Former Georgia DB Eric Stokes lands multi-year extension, per report appeared first on Saturday Down South.

Eric Stokes spent four seasons with the Green Bay Packers after being selected No. 29 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. His time in Green Bay wasn’t up to expectation, leading the Packers to decline his fifth-year option. He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders on a one-year, $3.5 million deal last offseason. This offseason, though, he has earned his bag.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Raiders have signed Stokes to a three-year, $30 million extension. Stokes, the former Georgia Bulldog, received $20 million guaranteed in the deal.

Las Vegas entered free agency with $121.7 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap. A chunk of that space opened up after the Maxx Crosby trade, which will facilitate the Raiders’ entire rebuilding process. Stokes will be a veteran presence on the unit while Tom Brady attempts to build Mark Davis’ team into a contender.

New head coach Klint Kubiak, barring something unforeseen, will have Fernando Mendoza as his quarterback next year. Las Vegas can select Mendoza at No. 1 overall and potentially snag a wide receiver at No. 14 overall. This swift reshaping of their offense — and retention of Stokes — likely won’t have them competing for a playoff spot in an incredibly tough AFC West in 2026, but should provide a stable foundation for the future.

Travis Kelce reportedly makes decision on 2026 NFL season https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/nfl/travis-kelce-reportedly-makes-decision-on-2026-nfl-season/ Mon, 09 Mar 2026 16:33:18 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=552239 The future Hall of Fame tight end has made up his mind on what he'll be doing when the 2026-27 NFL season kicks off.

The post Travis Kelce reportedly makes decision on 2026 NFL season appeared first on Saturday Down South.

]]>
With the NFL’s new league year on the horizon, the Kansas City Chiefs were staring at a blank space in their offense. Fortunately for Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, their future Hall of Fame’s tight end’s love for football is still burning red.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Travis Kelce will return to Kansas City for his 14th professional season. The decision follows the Chiefs’ worst year of Kelce’s career, where they went 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Retirement rumors have swirled around Kelce for a while, pretty much since he began dating Taylor Swift. But for now, he’ll still be her “guy on the Chiefs.” He’ll also still be a factor in Kansas City’s offense. Kelce led the Chiefs in receptions (76) and receiving yards (851) last season, and the lack of certainty in the team’s receiving room should have him well-positioned for a healthy amount of targets.

Kansas City has two first-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft (No. 9, No. 29). In a Mar. 5 mock draft, ESPN’s Jordan Reid projected the Chiefs would take Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate at No. 9 overall. If that comes to fruition, Kansas City could give Kelce the Super Bowl sendoff he’s aspiring for next February. The NFL Draft begins Apr. 23.

The post Tua Tagovailoa posts statement after release from Miami Dolphins appeared first on Saturday Down South.

]]>
Things change quickly in the NFL. Back in 2023, Tua Tagovailoa led the league in passing yards (4,614) and made his first Pro Bowl appearance. His success convinced the Miami Dolphins to sign him to a four-year, $212.4 million extension in June 2024. From the moment the ink dried, the Dolphins have had buyer’s remorse. And on Monday, they decided they couldn’t live with their decision anymore. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Miami will cut the former Alabama quarterback at the start of the new league year on Wednesday (4:00 p.m. E.T.).

Shortly after news of his release hit social media, Tagovailoa took to Instagram to thank the Dolphins organization, teammates and the city of Miami for his time there.

“To the Miami Dolphins organization, my teammates, the front office and the incredible fans – Thank you for six unforgettable years,” Tagovailoa said. “From the moment I arrived, you believed in me, supported me, and embraced my family as your own… wearing this jersey and representing this city has been one of the greatest joys of my life.”

Tagovailoa, the No. 5 pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, posted 18,166 passing yards, 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions across 78 games for the Dolphins. His unfortunate injury luck undoubtedly played a role in his release. Miami absorbed an NFL-record $99 million in dead money — spread over 2 seasons by a post-June 1 designation — by cutting him.

Tagovailoa will get $54 million from the Dolphins this year. As a result, he will (likely) sign for the league minimum in free agency. The NFL’s legal tampering period begins at noon today.

Former Arkansas Razorbacks defensive back Montaric “Buster” Brown is staying put in Jacksonville after landing a 3-year, $33 million deal, according to Adam Schefter. Schefter also added that Brown would’ve had a strong market in free agency, but decided he didn’t want to leave Jacksonville.

Brown was a 7th-round pick in 2022 coming out of Arkansas. He played all 4 years at Arkansas and was recognized as First-team All-SEC in 2021.

Brown started 12 games for the Jaguars this past season, totaling 51 tackles, 43 of which were solo tackles, 12 passes defended, and a career high in interceptions with two. Since his debut in 2022, Brown has played in 52 games for the Jaguars and started in 29 of those games.

According to Pro Football Focus, Brown was given a 72.8 overall grade (20th CB) and a 75.5 coverage grade (14th) for his 2025 campaign. He also had a 15.9% forced incompletion rate and only allowed a 73.5 passer rating.

Brown’s best year so far came in 2024, when he played in all 17 games and started 10. He totaled 75 tackles, 8 passes defended, and 1 interception.

The 26-year-old will be a massive staple of the Jaguars’ defense going forward.

Former Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick has been traded to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick, according to Adam Schefter.

Fitzpatrick spent the past season playing for the team that originally drafted him, the Miami Dolphins. After spending just one season back in Miami, the former All-Pro is on the move again, this time taking his talents up north to the Jets. Last season, Fitzpatrick totaled 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 1 interception.

He’ll be a huge addition to head coach Aaron Glenn’s defense as he tries to rebuild the Jets.

The Miami Dolphins originally drafted Fitzpatrick with the No. 11 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent just a little over one season in Miami before demanding a trade due to frustrations with his role. He was traded in 2019 to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he would become a 3-time first-team All-Pro and 5-time Pro Bowler.

He was then traded back to Miami in a blockbuster deal back in 2025 that saw cornerback Jalen Ramsey join the Steelers.

Fitzpatrick is a two-time CFP national champion with the Crimson Tide. The defensive back earned the Chuck Bednarik Award, which recognizes the defensive player of the year in college football, and the Jim Thorpe Award, which is awarded to the top defensive back in college football, in 2017.

Former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been officially released from the Miami Dolphins, the team announced early Monday morning.

The former National Champion spent 6 seasons with the Dolphins after being selected 5th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. Tagovailoa’s NFL career has been littered with injuries since his rookie season. In 2022, Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in Week 4 against the Bengals just days after a Week 3 back/head injury. He would return later that season only to suffer another concussion in Week 16.

Tagovailoa did bounce back in 2023 and had his best season yet, totaling 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. However, in the last two years, the numbers have been steadily declining, leading to his release from the Dolphins.

Dolphins General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan wrote the following to announce Tagovailoa’s release:

“I recently informed Tua and his representation that we are going to move in a new direction at the quarterback position and will be releasing him after the start of the new league year.

“As I shared with Tua, I have great respect for the person and player he is. On behalf of the Miami Dolphins, I expressed our gratitude for his many contributions, both on the field and in the community, during his six seasons in Miami.”

Ex-Georgia star defensive tackle Jordan Davis was rewarded on Saturday for his immediate impact in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles locked up their first-round pick from the 2022 draft for the long haul, with Davis getting a 3-year extension worth a whopping $78 million. The new deal also includes $65 million guaranteed, and it makes Davis the highest-paid nose tackle in NFL history.

Davis wasn’t set to be a free agent this offseason, so the Eagles weren’t in immediate danger of losing Davis for the 2026 season. But by getting this extension done with the 13th overall pick of that 2022 draft, Philadelphia has ensured that Davis won’t be entering the free agent market next offseason.

The 26-year-old Charlotte native will now play this coming season on a 5th-year option that is worth roughly $12.9 million. After that, this lucrative extension that’s been ironed out will go into effect, as the Eagles hope to continue reaping the benefits from the former Bulldogs great.

Davis has appeared in 64 regular-season games for the Eagles as well as 9 playoff games through his first 4 seasons in Philadelphia. But Davis didn’t have his breakout year until this past season, when he registered a career-high 4.5 sacks and 72 total tackles.

On Saturday, Davis’ stellar production in 2025 was rewarded, with the former All-SEC performer, unanimous All-American and Outland Trophy winner getting paid like no other nose tackle in the history of pro football.

With Davis locked up for the long haul now, here is Kalshi’s current breakdown of who has the best chance to win the NFC East in 2026:

Kyler Murray’s time in Arizona has reportedly come to an end. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the club informed Murray on Tuesday that he will be released on the first day of the league year.

As Murray prepares to find his new team, he took time to thank Arizona for his time with the Cardinals in a post on social media.

A Heisman Trophy winner at Oklahoma, Murray had a strong beginning to his pro career, earning Rookie of the Year for 2019 and making the Pro Bowl in 2020 and ’21. Over his career, Murray has started 87 games, completing 67.1% of his passes for 20,460 yards and 121 touchdowns with 60 interceptions. He has also rushed for 3,193 yards and 32 scores.

Kadyn Proctor makes Mel Kiper’s list of NFL Combine standouts https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/nfl/kadyn-proctor-makes-mel-kipers-list-of-nfl-combine-standouts/ Mon, 02 Mar 2026 17:56:24 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=550944 The Crimson Tide's blindside protector dazzled his way into a potential first-round selection over the weekend.

The NFL Scouting Combine gives collegiate players the opportunity to showcase their raw abilities in front of all 32 franchises. It’s also a double-edged sword. While a great Combine performance can shoot you up draft boards, a poor one can send you tumbling down them. Fortunately, Alabama offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor crushed it in the eyes of at least one evaluator.

Early Monday morning, ESPN’s Mel Kiper revealed which players stood out to him at the Combine. Proctor, along with multiple other SEC players, made his list. Kiper gave Proctor rave reviews for his showing, and mentioned that his arm measurement could allow him to stay at his collegiate position in the league.

“Proctor slimmed down from 366 pounds to 352 for the combine and turned in a 5.21 in the 40. He also jumped 32½ inches in the vert, and his 33⅜-inch arms checked a box for teams that are interested in keeping him at tackle in the pros,” Kiper said. “With his size, athleticism, quickness and potential, Proctor has to be talked about in the mid-to-late first round.”

ESPN currently lists Proctor as the No. 6 tackle prospect in the draft. Any franchise with a need along the offensive line that’s picking in the back half of round one is sure to have him under consideration, especially when they factor his rushing and pass-catching chops into the equation. The 2026 NFL Draft begins Apr. 23.
