The Cougars (11-1) clinched a spot in the American Athletic Conference title game with a win over Navy on Friday and will likely earn a New Year’s Six bid — and a $6 million payout for the league — if they beat the East Division winner (Temple or South Florida) next week.

Herman has been the Gamecocks’ reported front-runner since late-October, but that ship, finally, has sailed.

“We had a meeting at the start of the week, and he said, ‘I’m not going to talk to anyone about any other job or be in communication with anyone, because I have a task at hand,'” wideout Demarcus Ayers said, according to SB Nation. “I don’t know what other jobs he’d been talked about with. But he for sure told us he killed the South Carolina thing. He told us this is where he wanted to be, and if anything happens, it’s not gonna be right now.

“This is important to him right now. I think the guys really appreciated that.”

Herman has the support of his players, increased attendance at games and momentum from boosters and the Houston brass has made noticeable strides to ensure they keep him for the long haul.

“Coach Herman and I talk, his agent and I talk,” Yurachek said after Friday’s win, according to SB Nation. “I know where he stands as far as the University of Houston is concerned, and I’m very confident that he will be the head coach at the University of Houston next year. We’ve made a significant investment that has not gone unnoticed to try to retain coach Herman and his staff, and we’ve not yet completed that deal.”

Herman, like Memphis coach Justin Fuente, appears to be at the top of every school’s wishlist as a young, expert recruiter who boasts an exciting offense. Even if Herman leaves Houston at the end of the season, he’s doing so the right way by refusing to entertain other opportunities while the Cougars have a conference championship to win.

No outside distractions, he says, at least not for the duration of the regular season.

LSU dispelled previous reports Friday on Twitter that Miles had been informed Saturday vs. Texas A&M would be his final game with the program.

According to Tiger Rag, Miles informed members of the Gridiron Club, LSU’s booster group, that he would not coach the bowl game since this would be his final appearance as head coach.

Whaley (Beaumont, Texas) is Georgia’s 17th commit in a class currently ranked inside the top 5 nationally by 247Sports. At 6-foot, 210 pounds, Whaley is considered a power back and is ranked as the fourth-best player at his position in the country.

The Under Armour All-American has a visit to Texas in December and has already taken officials to Arkansas, Texas A&M and Georgia. Whaley has rushed for 1,530 yards this season and 21 touchdowns.

This matchup won’t be pretty from an offensive perspective, but that’s alright with Derek Mason. Five or more field goals will be made in this one, but Tennessee holds on.

Florida State at Florida — In what promises to be one of college football’s best games this weekend between evenly matched teams, the Gators will score a defensive touchdown late to prove the final tally. Vernon Hargreaves with a pick-six perhaps?

Texas A&M at LSU — It should be an emotional night in Baton Rouge for what many expect will be the final game for Les Miles. Reports surfaced Thursday that his firing is imminent. Miles will leave his stamp on this game with a trick play in the fourth quarter that not only turns momentum in the Tigers’ direction, but ultimately is the play that wins this evenly-matched battle.

Ole Miss at Mississippi St. — 1,000 yards of offense and more than 100 points? Get your popcorn ready for a wild ride in Starkville. Chad Kelly vs. Dak Prescott makes for one of the more memorable shootouts in Egg Bowl history, but the senior prevails in his going away party.

Clemson at South Carolina — So the question isn’t if the Tigers will win on Saturday, but by how much? Will Dabo Swinney put his foot on the accelerator in the second half or can the Gamecocks muster enough intestinal fortitude to keep it respectable? Deshaun Watson manages 300 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as Clemson finishes off a 12-0 regular season.

The SEC will welcome a string of big games during Week 14, but is excitement quickly falling for each as Saturday draws closer? That appears to be the case on the secondary market, where each of this week’s top-priced SEC games have experienced a sharp decline in average price since last Tuesday.

Below is a list of Week 14’s most expensive games and the tumble each has taken over the past week, according to TiqIQ.com:

Alabama at Auburn  |  Avg. Price: $316.11  |  Get-in: $141  |  Weekly Trend: -27.5%

While the Alabama Crimson Tide continue to decimate the competition, there may be hope for them still to claim the top spot in the College Football Playoff rankings. However, their Iron Bowl bout with Auburn this Saturday has seen ticket prices fall sharply on the secondary market. The average price for Auburn vs Alabama tickets is now $316.11, marking a 27.5% drop from last Tuesday’s average of $435.73. The cheapest available ticket is now listed for $141.

So what does that mean for fans? Simple – as the game draws closer to kick off, prices are likely to continue to drop. Last year’s game in Tuscaloosa owned an average price of $396.45, making Saturday’s game 20.3% cheaper on average.

The Florida Gators are headed to the SEC Championship Game as winners of the East division, and Saturday’s game against the Florida State Seminoles will be the team’s final regular season match of the season. While the Gators look forward to the December 5 title game in Atlanta, Florida State has been overshadowed by Clemson in the ACC. At 9-2 the Seminoles are an afterthought to the undefeated Tigers, who will likely claim the top CFP ranking again this week after defeating Wake Forest last Saturday.

The 2015 edition of the Egg Bowl will be held at Davis Wade Stadium this Saturday. While the annual game has been a staple rivalry between the two schools since 1901, it has experienced the second biggest decline in ticket price among all SEC games over the last week. Mississippi State vs Ole Miss tickets average $155.53, a 29% drop from last Tuesday’s $219.07 average, and the cheapest ticket is $76.

Both teams enter the game at 8-3 on the season. Should Auburn take down Alabama earlier in the day, however, an Ole Miss victory over Mississippi State would allow the Rebels to face Florida in the SEC title game next weekend.

Rounding out the SEC’s top-priced games this week is a game between South Carolina and Clemson. Ticket prices have dropped considerably, however, with South Carolina vs Clemson tickets now averaging $154.54. That is 31.7% lower than last Tuesday’s average of $226.20. The get-in price starts from $57.

If heading to Columbia this weekend, Hipmunk.com offers the best deals on flights and hotels. Columbia hotels on Hipmunk start from $42 per night while flights can be arranged from anywhere in the world.

Ikenna Okeke, a three-star safety out of Smyrna, committed to the Aggies on Wednesday, becoming Texas A&M’s 18th verbal commit for 2016.

Recruited by John Chavis and Terry Joseph, Okeke took his official College Station earlier this month and chose the Aggies over Notre Dame.

Each one of these four coaches have a sense of where to look for players in the state of Florida, each with a direct tie to the Sunshine State. Muschamp coached the Gators from 2011-14 before joining Gus Malzahn’s staff as Auburn’s defensive coordinator last December. Cristobal, believed to be one of the front-runners at Miami, is a Florida native and led the FIU program for several years before teaming up with Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa.

Current Florida assistants Shannon and Collins are also connected to greater Central Florida. Shannon spent 20 years on staff at Miami after playing there in the 1980s while Collins worked two seasons (2008-09) as UCF’s linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator.

The Orlando Sentinel report indicates that Muschamp and former Auburn coach Gene Chizik, who’s now at North Carolina as the Tar Heels’ defensive coordinator, have expressed “high interest” in UCF.

Former Florida State Heisman-winning quarterback Chris Weinke is another possible candidate.

The Knights are only two years removed from a 12-1 season highlighted by a BCS bowl game victory over Baylor. They’ll try and avoid an 0-12 season tonight in Orlando.

A capacity crowd provided Miles with a proper send-off in case this was it for the man who has made two two national appearances since 2007.

Miles answered questions about his future, thanked many young fans individually and reflected on his tenure in Baton Rouge during what quickly became an emotional ordeal.

Brad: Do the Tigers have any energy left after last week’s hard-fought game against Tennessee? In Gary Pinkel’s home finale, Mizzou’s offense didn’t show up, but the defense did … and that’s what we’ve seen all season out of this team. Brandon Allen is arguably the nation’s hottest quarterback in November, throwing 14 touchdown passes to just one interception. It’s hard to believe the senior signal caller surpassed the 3,000-yard barrier against Mississippi State despite spending his previous three seasons in a run-heavy scheme. It shows his progression and more over the Razorbacks’ hidden gem when Allen performs in an offense more friendly to his strengths. In May, I took a bunch of flack for placing Allen behind Dak Prescott in my preseason SEC QB rankings. Most didn’t deem Allen worthy of that high a mention. Attaboy, BA.

Arkansas 31, Mizzou 13

Christopher: Arkansas fields potentially the worst secondary in the SEC, but I don’t think Missouri has the personnel to exploit that matchup. But the Tigers secondary allows just 5.7 yards per pass attempt, which is tied with Alabama for second-best in the SEC. So don’t expect Brandon Allen to carve up the Mizzou defense as he did to Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The over/under for this game is 44, suggesting a 28-14 or 31-14 type of score. I think it’s an accurate projection. Despite 84 percent of the public betting on the Razorbacks, I’m going with Arkansas. Suggesting the Tigers can muster 14 points is a stretch, and more than 14 just isn’t going to happen without some costly Hogs turnovers.

Saturday’s games

Alabama (-14) at Auburn

Brad: One game stands between the Crimson Tide and their quest for the SEC West and of course, it’s the Iron Bowl. In August, we all circled this game as the potential game of the year in the conference, but the Tigers didn’t hold up their end of the bargain. Jeremy Johnson was overrated and Will Muschamp’s impact in his first season on defense over-stated. Auburn stands where its record indicates … this has been a forgettable year for Gus Malzahn and staff. This won’t be one of the classics, but watchable in the second half nonetheless.

Alabama 28, Auburn 13

Christopher: Auburn is 12th in the SEC in rushing defense. Auburn’s pass defense ranks low in every metric but interceptions. But Jake Coker has thrown just two interceptions in his last five games after a couple of multi-interception outings early in the season. Alabama hasn’t lost a fumble in those five games and has 10 takeaways. With the exception of last week, Auburn’s defense has played decent football since Carl Lawson returned. But unless the Tide makes some crucial turnovers, Bama should be able to score in the upper 20s or even in the 30s. Auburn has run the ball effectively in spurts, but Jovon Robinson and Peyton Barber aren’t going to gash Alabama. It’ll be up to Jeremy Johnson and/or Sean White to keep this game competitive. And as good as Alabama’s secondary has been, forget about it.

Alabama 31, Auburn 14

Georgia (-5) at Georgia Tech

Brad: It wouldn’t be rivalry weekend without at least one prediction going against the grain, right? Going with the Yellow Jackets here, an emphatic gut punch during a less-than-stellar season well short of expectations for Mark Richt and his football team.

Georgia Tech 31, Georgia 24

Christopher: In Vegas, a spread of five points generally means “we don’t really know what to do with this game.” But it’s held steady all week rather than shooting up to six or down to 3.5. According to the Sagarin Ratings, Georgia Tech ranks No. 52 and Georgia Southern ranks No. 63, but I buy the argument that the Yellow Jackets could be less competitive than the Eagles were last week. Tech gave up 38 points to a mediocre Miami last week. This is a revenge game as well, and Mark Richt’s job still could be on the line here.

Georgia 28, Georgia Tech 20

Louisville (-4) at Kentucky

Brad: Bowl eligibility is so close the Wildcats can taste it. I like Kentucky as a home underdog against Bobby Petrino’s Cardinals. Mark Stoops needs this one or else the second half of the season, for a second consecutive season, will be labeled a complete disaster.

Kentucky 27, Louisville 24

Christopher: In their last five games, Louisville is 4-1 and Kentucky is 1-4. These teams are headed in opposite directions. This game is crucial for the Wildcats. At stake is bowl eligibility and a four-game losing streak to the Cardinals. Oh, and Mark Stoops’ job security. Win, and it’s probably fine despite some grumblings about the team’s second-half slides. Lose, and Stoops enters next season with a lot of pressure to improve or give someone else a crack. It’s been a while since the UK defense faced a team with a considerable offense, but the Cardinals have scored 41, 38 and 34 in their last three. I just don’t think the Wildcats have the defense to keep up, just like last year.

Louisville 35, Kentucky 28

Vanderbilt at Tennessee (-17.5)

Brad: *Cue Rocky Top opening chords* An 8-4 regular season for Tennessee? That’s a lot more respectable than it looked in the early going for the Vols who were slow out of the gate with losses to Oklahoma, Florida and Arkansas. The defense for Butch Jones is finally playing up to its capability level and Tennessee’s run game is running at full speed. I know the Vols are hot and Tennessee has won four straight games, but pulling away from an elite defense seems unlikely. It won’t be close, but Vanderbilt covers.

Tennessee 27, Vanderbilt 10

Christopher: This is a lot of points for a Vols team that scored 27, 24 and 19 in its last three games against mediocre opponents. Vanderbilt’s defense is every bit as good as Missouri’s, and UT beat those Tigers 19-8. I expect Tennessee to shut down Vandy’s offense, if not shut it out. But I’d be surprised if the Vols post a score higher than the mid-20s.

Tennessee 24, Vanderbilt 7

Florida State at Florida (-2)

Brad: Much of the pre-game buzz has surrounded Dalvin Cook, Florida State’s stud running back who has rushed for a single-season program record 1,475 yards this season. The Gators will likely be without defensive standouts Alex McCalister and Jonathan Bullard and ‘limp’ in with an inconsistent offense. Arguably Florida’s toughest matchup from a personnel standpoint offensively, the Gators need an above-average outing from Treon Harris to keep faint College Football Playoff hopes alive. I think they’ll get it.

Florida 19, Florida State 13

Christopher: Don’t buy the reports out of Gainesville or what my colleague Brad Crawford is selling. Jonathan Bullard is likely to play in this game against Florida State. But the Gators still enter this contest with a long list of injured players, a bumbling offense and a guaranteed spot in the SEC Championship Game. Coach Jim McElwain’s team is playing with house money. Don’t expect many points in this game, and a crucial turnover may decide the outcome. Florida’s offensive line should get buried in this one, though, and I like FSU to at least muster a few touchdowns.

Texas A&M at LSU (-5.5)

Brad: Will this be Les Miles’ final game? Many believe that’s the case based on rampant reports over the last week detailing a soured relationship between the Mad Hatter and LSU AD Joe Alleva. In fact, the two haven’t spoken in a week (according to Miles). Texas A&M has its own share of challenges, but not as enormous as the elephant in the room in Baton Rouge. I’m not comfortable with this prediction, but Texas A&M hasn’t shown it can stop the run and Leonard Fournette likely needs another 200-yard effort to be invited to the Heisman Trophy presentation as a finalist. Tigers win and cover.

LSU 34, Texas A&M 24

Christopher: Texas A&M still can’t stop the run, and LSU keeps insisting on running the football. I expect the Tigers to hand off 40+ times in this game. Leonard Fournette should impress, perhaps threatening 200 yards. The Aggies quietly have gotten more physical on offense and have been running the ball well themselves. But Texas A&M still hasn’t beaten LSU since joining the SEC, and coach Kevin Sumlin’s team has struggled even in wins against hard-nosed, pro-style, physical teams like Arkansas. Until Texas A&M proves it can win a game against a team that plays this style of football, I’m picking against it.

LSU 31, Texas A&M 24

Clemson (-17) at South Carolina

Brad: Finally, the forgettable season for the South Carolina Gamecocks is mercifully almost over. But how big would a win over Clemson be to punctuate what amounts to Shawn Elliott’s final game as head coach? The Tigers are No. 1 for a reason, Elliott says. “We’ve got a former walk-on quarterback playing for us and they’ve got a Heisman candidate.” That about sums it up. Deshaun Watson takes advantage of a bad defense early and often as Clemson rolls. Dabo makes sure he doesn’t run it up (too much).

Clemson 35, South Carolina 10

Christopher: Normally, Clemson would use this game as a prime opportunity to make a final impression on the College Football Playoff committee. That’s not necessary here. First, the team will earn a No. 2 seed at worst should it beat South Carolina and North Carolina. Second, the game against the Tar Heels may be a bit tricky. So don’t be shocked if the Tigers get out to a big lead and then protect some of the starters. This is the last game for not only Shawn Elliott, but all of South Carolina’s seniors as well as Pharoh Cooper. It’s also the end of the Steve Spurrier era, even though Spurrier hasn’t coached this team in weeks. Still, last week’s loss against The Citadel wasn’t exactly a fluke. I can’t foresee a way that allows South Carolina to keep this one close.

Clemson 42, South Carolina 17

Ole Miss (-1) at Mississippi State

Brad: Dak Prescott can’t lose his home Egg Bowl finale, can he? It wouldn’t fit the storybook ending he deserves as one of the SEC’s greatest players of his era, certainly the best to play at Mississippi State. Of course it’s possible considering the athleticism on the Ole Miss defense and the Rebels’ penchant for big plays and a lot of points offensively, but if there was ever a game for Prescott to leave his signature, this is it — an opportunity to squander his rival’s last shot at a division title. Ole Miss needs Auburn to upset Alabama to clinch the ultimate prize, but it’ll need to hold up its end of the bargain as well and I don’t think that happens in Starkville. Enjoy your turkey leftovers during this must-watch rivalry shootout.

Mississippi State 41, Ole Miss 38

Christopher: On paper, this is the definition of a tossup game. It’s also the regular-season and state-of-Mississippi farewell for players like Dak Prescott and likely Laquon Treadwell, Robert Nkemdiche and Laremy Tunsil. It could be the last time both of these programs are ranked entering the Egg Bowl for a number of seasons. I expect both of these quarterbacks to throw the ball until their arms get sore. We could see the winning team get into the 40s. I like the Ole Miss secondary and pass-catchers slightly more. The Rebels are a top 15 type team, and this win will vault them into that rightful spot. The Class of 2013 never will won a championship, but they’ve brought a lot of pride to Oxford and this will be a nice parting gift for the early NFL entrants.

College football insider Pat Forde is reporting that Houston coach Tom Herman, long rumored the front-runner with a contract in place with the Gamecocks, is no longer a candidate to become South Carolina’s next head coach.

Citing sources, Forde says that Herman has withdrawn his name despite “extensive third-party discussions” with South Carolina. Various reports indicated Herman was the Gamecocks’ top choice to succeed Steve Spurrier.

Forde’s story coincides with an earlier Wednesday report indicating that Alabama’s Kirby Smart is the new front-runner in Columbia.

South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner said last week he expects to name a new coach in December.

Tennessee and Georgia were major players for his services. Davis took official visits to Knoxville and Athens in October.

Davis earned MVP honors at Nike’s 7-on-7 tournament at The Opening in July. He was recruited by Dameyune Craig.

The second-year pro quarterback and former SEC lightning rod was demoted to third-team by the Cleveland Browns this week after another video emerged highlighting Manziel being the life of the party — literally — during the bye week.

Manziel had been announced as the starter for next week’s game against Baltimore, but coach Mike Pettine apparently has had enough.

During Tuesday’s press conference, veteran Browns quarterback Josh McCown offered support for Manziel and says the spotlight on him since he’s entered the league should be blamed on social media.

6. South Carolina’s ‘Tailfeather’ helmet

Chrome garnet tailfeathers on a white shell? We’re in. Shawn Elliott surprised his players against Florida following pre-game warmups with a never-before-seen logo that nearly spanned South Carolina’s entire helmet. It marked the first time since the mid 1970s the Gamecocks did not wear the program’s recognizable ‘Block C’ primary logo on their shells. Paired with the black alternate uniform, perhaps this alternate helmet would’ve received more positive pub if it were black with a chrome decal. Just a thought.

5. Florida’s ‘Two-sided’ helmet

Give Jim McElwain credit — he’s tried to infuse some excitement into the program this season with several different uniform options including the all-blue home alternate and orange jerseys. But the Gators’ two-sided white helmets against Vanderbilt came as a surprise. The program’s primary wordmark on one side and the traditional ‘F’ on the other, it channeled memories of Tim Tebow and a previous alternate the Gators revealed during his tenure.

4. Tennessee’s ‘Smokey Grey’

One of the league’s most anticipated alternates this season during Tennessee’s first year with the Swoosh, the Vols’ two-toned smokey grey was well-executed — better than those other grey monstrosities worn during the Adidas era. Nike stepped it up with additional ‘Power 5’ details with heavy orange accents throughout. Tennessee’s helmet featured an outline of the Smoky Mountains, a standout detail for originality. The double-layered orange stripe down the center of the helmet that fades to the familiar checkerboard really completes this look.

3. LSU’s white helmets

Rarely are we given the opportunity to see LSU’s alternate white helmet, but the Tigers brought it out for a special home game against South Carolina in October. Paired with purple jerseys and white pants, the set became an instant classic. Dare we say this should be LSU’s home primary option next season? We doubt the Tigers’ all-white look worn last time out we’ll be seen again anytime soon.

2. Texas A&M’s ‘Aggie Nights’

When teams go all-black, simple is better. And matte helmets are in. The ‘Aggie Nights’ set revealed vs. South Carolina were meant to be worn at night since helmet logos were reflective, so much of the buzz surrounding one of the SEC’s best looks this season dwindled. Nevertheless, Adidas did a great job incorporating as little silver and maroon as possible into Texas A&M’s jersey and the alternate logo on the pants at the left hip looked outstanding. Coming in a distant second is the ‘Aggie Ice’ creation that Texas A&M donned over the weekend in Nashville. The helmets were awesome, but the monochrome white look with silver accents left a lot to be desired and lacked originality.

1. Vanderbilt’s ‘Deep Water’

Set off by a HydroGraphic helmet complete with a gold foil facemask and anchor logo, Vanderbilt’s ‘Deep Water’ alternate set the Commodores debuted against Georgia in September and wore again against Texas A&M is easily the SEC’s best alternate look this season. It’s an original look from Nike in the era of copycat syndrome in the uniform department. Stylized gold numerals contrast well on a gray base and the program’s reveal was one of college football’s best this season. And the cleats? Black Zoom Vapors with gold swooshes were the perfect finishing touch.

Moses expressed his interest in the Tigers as a prep freshman and plays at University Lab School in Baton Rouge — literally on LSU’s campus. He sent a series of text messages to SEC Country on Monday night defending LSU’s current regime:

“To be honest, I personally think it’s wrong. I have a good relationship with coach Miles, and you have to think about it. Before the three losses, people weren’t talking about firing him because LSU was undefeated. Now look, I think everything is a process. Just like how last year LSU was a really young team. Then they grew. They have improved since last year, and I feel like that they’ll improve even more next year maybe to even win it all OR win most of their regular season games. LSU really has a bright future. … Just really takes some strong supporters and faithful fans to actually see it. I mean, even though I de-committed from LSU, it was only for me to explore and view my options, but I still have love for the school no matter what. I just hate how the media is bashing coach Miles like that. I’m friends with all of his kids, and I also played alongside his son Manny Miles, so I actually have a real relationship with the man. I just wish they’d give him some slack. Just like there’s a slogan “Built by Bama,” LSU is building their program back to that strong team they used to be. Once these guys keep strengthening their mindset and set a TEAM GOAL on where they want to be and what they have to do and get the incoming recruits to have that same mindset once they come, they’ll be just fine. Maybe even an unstoppable force. The last time LSU had an 11-win season was in 2011. They’ve lost a lot since then. Honestly I think they’re doing a great job as far as the rebuilding process goes. I think maybe next season they’ll be ready. Like I said, it’s all a process. Coach Miles knows what he’s doing. You’re not going to become great overnight. It takes time and patience. God has a plan for these guys and coach Miles.”

Moses was offered by Alabama and LSU in junior high. The five-star has since blossomed into a can’t-miss, Jadeveon Clowney-level prospect at the linebacker and running back positions.

Prescott published an open letter to the Mississippi State faithful this week on Sports Illustrated’s Campus Rush, describing how much their support and the city of Starkville has meant to him during his career.

Here’s a few excerpts from his letter. You can read it in full, here:

Opening expression of gratitude:

Back when I was a senior in high school in Haughton, La., I had a chance to go to LSU. Everyone I grew up with adored LSU, including my mom. But I chose to come to Mississippi State because I wanted to start a new tradition instead of perpetuating an established one. Since I came here, my teammates and I have had a lot of success on the field, and that has given us a chance to uplift the school and the university.

In the past few years here, we’ve been able to transform the expectations around Mississippi State. And while people have given me credit for helping change the football culture, what they don’t understand is how appreciative I am of my teammates, coaches, the university and the city of Starkville for the role they’ve played in changing me.

Saturday will be my last game at Davis-Wade Stadium, the last time I’ll be able to play in front of my home fans. It’s difficult to quantify how much the support of everyone here has meant to me. I came here as a 17-year-old in the spring of 2011, and so much has happened since. On the field, I went from an anonymous redshirt to a short-yardage specialist to a Heisman Trophy candidate. Off the field, I showed up as a wild kid and grew up. My mom and my grandfather both passed away while I was here. When my mom died from cancer two years ago during the season, I can’t tell you how many messages I got on Twitter, Facebook, email and through handwritten letters to the football offices.

On NFL opportunity after junior season:

After last season, I really wasn’t tempted to go to the NFL. What drew me back—what really sealed it—was losing the Alabama game and then losing the Ole Miss game. Especially the Ole Miss game. Then we lost the Orange Bowl to Georgia Tech, and there was no way I could leave Starkville. This place has done so much for me and the school has been there for me. I couldn’t leave after losing three of my last four games. There was no way.

Ode to Dan Mullen:

Coach Dan Mullen deserves so much credit for what he has done here. I wouldn’t dare for one second to want to play for another college coach. I’m so thankful for him giving me the opportunity to come play at Mississippi State. He and coach John Hevesy saw the talent in me before anyone else; they extended my first major Division I offer. They saw the passion that I play with, the heart all the way back to when I came to camp here. That’s what led to them giving me that offer. That’s something that I never wanted to get away from. That’s who I am. Just for him to give me that opportunity was another reason that I just play with the passion and the effort I do.

Gardner, a 6-foot, 195-pound defensive back out of Cocoa, Fla., is a four-star prospect who could compete for immediate playing time in the secondary.

Whether it was intentional or not, Alabama’s Cyrus Jones stirred the pot this week when asked about Auburn’s group of wide receivers.

“I don’t think they’re nothing special, honestly,” Jones said, according to AL.com. “But we still can’t overlook them. We’ve still got to prepare for them like we’re playing the best guys in our conference. I just think we have to come in there ready to do our job, which we do every weekend.”

Honesty followed by a back-handed compliment ending with team-based fact.

You’ll have to excuse Jones for being blunt. He’s coming off the best game of his career against Charleston Southern when he returned two punts for touchdowns and recovered a fumble. Jones is one of the headliners in a secondary that’s shown vast improvement this fall, a group that’s helped the Crimson Tide lead the SEC with 15 interceptions this season.

Alabama’s giving up just 187.2 yards passing per contest, nearly 40 yards less than last season’s average.

During last season’s Iron Bowl, Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall carved up Kirby Smart’s defense to the tune of 456 yards and three touchdowns. Deep threats Sammie Coates and Duke Williams are no longer with the team, but senior pass-catcher Ricardo Louis has emerged as a reliable No. 1.

One can assume this week’s tweet from Louis published on Monday is in reference to Jones’ pre-game commentary:

Saturday’s game can’t get here fast enough. Second-ranked Alabama (10-1) wraps up the SEC West with a victory, but a loss for the two-touchdown favorites likely squanders any shot at the College Football Playoff and could cost the Crimson Tide the West if Ole Miss beats Mississippi State.

College football insider Bruce Feldman mentioned two new names as possibilities in the Tigers’ search on Monday inside a robust story speculating on more than 50 of the ‘most intriguing names in the coaching carousel‘ this season.

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley received buzz before this season as maestro behind quarterback Shane Carden’s Air Raid success at East Carolina last season and now has picked up more momentum in Norman. His quarterback, Baker Mayfield, will likely be a Heisman finalist and is putting up eye-popping numbers in Riley’s up-tempo scheme.

Should Mizzou go in that direction, it would make for a philosophical overhaul offensively, but Drew Lock appears to have enough upside to handle a switch. Riley is a Texas native and could recruit well in the Lonestar State for the Tigers.

Another name Feldman mentioned is Brent Venables, Clemson’s fiery defensive coordinator who is obsessed with pressure. Despite losing the majority of his starters off a defense ranked No. 1 in the country in 2015, Venables’ unit is ranked fifth overall and tops in the ACC this season.

Considering the talent pool the Tigers are working with defensively along with the return of Harold Brantley, you’d have to think Venables would be enticed by the personnel.

Considered one of the nation’s top quarterbacks, Franks has visited Florida three consecutive weekends and the Gators are believed to be his leader. Florida State is also in the mix for the 6-foot-5 pro-style passer from Crawfordville, Florida.

Several recruiting insiders have reported that Franks is unsure about the future of the current LSU staff, specifically Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

The Hokies are expected to announce a hire in the next seven days to follow in the footsteps of local legend Frank Beamer, the program’s all-time winningest coach.

Mullen’s name has circulated for several major openings in recent, but the Bulldogs have incentivized his contract and always given reason to stay. Mullen, 43, is 54-34 overall since taking over in Starkville in December 2008.

He was named the SEC’s Coach of the Year last season by Sporting News after leading Mississippi State to its first No. 1 ranking after a 9-0 start.

Mullen currently makes north of $4 million at Mississippi State, so it would take some convincing from the Hokies. Of the bevy of jobs open in college football at the FBS level however, Virginia Tech is considered in the top half, not to mention the competitive advantage Mullen would have in the ACC compared to the challenging SEC West.

In 10 games, Jones is averaging 8.1 tackles per contest for the Tigers.

Yep, you guessed it, it’s rivalry week in college football.

Friend becomes foe and family turns distant during the most important weekend for bragging rights across the nation.

Entitled ‘My Letter To UF Fans’, check out parts of this message posted Monday on Reddit from a Florida State supporter ahead of Saturday’s game:

It is thanksgiving time and it is the time for being thankful and the time for sharing. You and us, we share a lot. We share a state, we share a love for college football, heck out fan bases are made of members of the same family. Really that is what we are…family.

I always hear UF talk about FSU being our little brothers. I couldn’t agree more! Not only that but we are Miami’s little brother too. We are a younger program, we don’t have the resources you do, and our history really only dates back to the late 1970’s.

Even still, I can’t stand you. You are like the oldest brother of the family that thinks he is entitled to everything, believes he is the best but has to watch his two younger brothers wipe up his accomplishments over and over again. The older brother lashes out about how much better he is than his younger brothers and we are left there rolling our eyes. We have done more with our limited history than you have done in yours dating back to 1902. We are like the little brother that grew a few inches taller, better but still younger.

Then there is your sense of superiority. Are you the best University in Florida? It is certainly hard to argue that according to the Princeton ranks. I don’t think any FSU fan would argue. We just wish you would stop pretending to be significantly better than everyone around you. FSU is at least a close second and at best a University that challenges UF with concentrations in different degree programs. In my experience, and numerous other fans of other universities in Florida, your academic dominance is not significant. Yes, engineering, chemistry, and biology are fantastic programs but compared to the rest of Florida’s universities this is your sole dominance. As Florida’s higher education system grows one this is clear: USF, UCF, and FSU are located in places for opportunities while UF is simply not. After college you can find opportunities in Tampa, Orlando and Tallahassee. Gainesville is a small town with limited opportunities outside of working for UF, going to grad school, or moving out. Which leads me on to my next point…

The fan goes on to bash the city of Gainesville, the Florida fanbase’s arrogance and the lack of hospitality following a visit to The Swamp in 2009.

Despite lingering injuries (foot, ribs, back) and a noticeable decline in performance, the 18-year NFL vet will not retire at season’s end, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Florio reports that Manning is “absolutely determined” to recover from a variety of injuries and return to form for 2016, according to sources close to the former Tennessee quarterback.

Manning has fought through a challenging year on the field, posting career-lows in completion percentage (59.9), touchdown passes (9) and QB rating (67.6). Brock Osweiler appears to be Denver’s signal caller of the future and sources say Manning would be willing to play elsewhere next season if it comes to that.

Officiating a football game is no easy task as several decisions are scrutinized by rabid fans, hot-wired coaches and mouthy players.

So when officials do something worthy of a highlight, it’s important to make note.

This high school referee had to be a former running back, right? With wheels like this, opposing defenders wouldn’t have a chance.

The Tigers have lost three straight since debuting at No. 2 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, their latest setback coming over the weekend in Oxford.

Remember Katy Perry’s corndog comment during a pre-game videoboard montage? Rebels fans took it one step further after the 38-17 beating, trolling LSU with several billboards boasting the final score.

Sure, creativity is lacking a bit, but the messages are hilarious nonetheless:

LSU’s season is in a catastrophic tailspin, slippage that will likely cost Les Miles his job despite a hefty $15 million buyout. Brandon Harris is playing without confidence and the Tigers have turned lethargic on defense. But there’s still Leonard Fournette, a main attraction as far as bowl committees are concerned. He’ll sell tickets and a fan base that historically travels well to postseason games (when the team is hot) should help.

I’m struggling with the Florida-based Citrus and TaxSlayer (Gator) Bowl games. If LSU beats Texas A&M in next week’s finale to finish 8-3, I’d assume Orlando likes the possibility of hosting Miles and the Tigers against Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines. But if the Aggies win and Georgia finishes 9-3 with a victory over Georgia Tech, I think the committee leans toward the Bulldogs.

The Citrus takes its pick of the SEC’s top available team (after Alabama, Florida) should both LSU and Georgia win, which could even be nine-win Ole Miss. The TaxSlayer is considered in the ‘pool of six’ and by rule, will be in consultation with schools and other bowl games to determine best fit. Jacksonville’s picked a team from the East three of the last four seasons.

The Birmingham and Independence Bowl games select after the pool of six matchups are finalized. Auburn and Kentucky will likely be the two 6-6 teams left in the discussion. The Tigers are already bowl eligible, but the Wildcats must beat Louisville next weekend to grab victory No. 6.

There’s hope however for a couple 5-7s …

With 80 bowl spots, there are 70 eligible teams with at least six wins … and another 13 5-6 teams with one game left.

During the second quarter against the Miami Dolphins, McClain faked a blitz and dropped into coverage, baiting quarterback Ryan Tannehill into a bad read.

McClain stepped in front of the underneath route, made an athletic interception and returned it 12 yards untouched for the touchdown:

McClain was drafted in the first round by the Oakland Raiders in 2010 after earning the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Year honor.

The major obstacle — the $17 million buyout owed to Miles and his staff — is not an issue, according to a “highly ranked source involved with the decision-making process.”

Following Saturday’s loss at Ole Miss, Miles declined to comment on his future at the program but did say he planned on talking to his players on Monday to clear up any questions they may have.

Smith’s sources say that Miles met with LSU officials last week to discuss the end game.

The unranked Tigers (7-3) have lost three straight since debuting at No. 2 in the initial College Football Playoff Poll during the first week of November. LSU finished 8-5 last season, strengthening the administration’s displeasure with Miles.

Michigan State’s win at Ohio State and Oklahoma’s victory over upset-minded TCU pushed both Top 10 teams into Herbstreit’s new final four, revealed Sunday prior to the release of the Week 13 Coaches and AP Poll.

Michigan State’s win over the Buckeyes snapped the defending national champion’s NCAA record 30-game winning streak in the Big Ten. The Spartans can clinch the division with a win over Penn State next weekend and would face Iowa in the league title game.

I am sorry I didn’t understand him better until this week. It is clear from his remarks that he recognizes his leadership role, both on and off the field, and that he truly cares about the kids watching him. I respect his comments just as much as he did mine, and I wish him nothing but continued success on the field and in life.”

Newton said earlier this week that he read Plorin’s letter, a message that chastised the quarterback’s “chest puffs, pelvic thrusts and arrogant struts” during a recent win over the Titans.

“Everybody is entitled to their own opinion,” Newton said. “You can’t fault her for that. It is what it is. If she feels offended, I’ll apologize to her. But at the end of the day, I am who I am.”

Now that “Tennessee Mom” is satisfied, let’s limit the complaints about end zone dances and showing up the opponent, shall we?
